I love owls, but I don’t draw them very often. Recently my husband gave me a great reference book: The Illustrated Owl, by Denny Rogers. This features Barn, Barred, and Great Horned Owls. I just about squealed when I saw the book. I know, not very dignified but this book is wonderful! There are around a couple hundred drawings of the birds from all angles, anatomical drawings with measurements and drawings of the feathers and how they effect flight. There are some reference photos as well. I’d love to find a similar book about crows.

I’ll probably use this book a lot since I’m of starting a sketchbook devoted to birds. I am enjoying learning the anatomy of owls and hope to draw them from memory soon.
A quick note: I’m not an affiliate or anything. I just love this book. If you’ve seen a good reference book about crows, I’d love to know about it. Leave me a comment and I’ll check it out. Thanks!

I like the owl drawings Mellanie. I have tried a couple in the past and found them quite tricky. I love all sorts of crows and rooks and really like to draw them but haven’t put any on my blog yet.
