Ink and Watercolor Wash: Back to Sketching

michael_3_09

I had been neglecting my sketchbook so I got out my dip pen and did a bunch of sketches.   The best of the bunch is this cartoon of my husband.  I found a picture that I had taken of him more than ten years ago and took a few liberties with it.  I applied an indigo watercolor wash because coolness of the color seemed to match his expression.

It felt so good to just let go and not worry about the outcome or even finishing the thing. Coming back to my sketchbook is a lot like coming home after a long trip spent in too many hotel rooms.

  1. Lovely sketch of your hubby Mellanie. He looks very imposing. I have been neglecting my sketchbooks too so I will have to get those out again. It certainly does free things up as my drawings are always a little on the tight side.

Oh, he’s a darling. I had a good time playing up this expression.

  3. Hi there, there were so many images to comment on but i picked this guy, what a lovely expressive portrait. And love your scratch art and all the black and white studies. Good for you for making a study of one color range.

Thanks for stopping by Joanie! So glad you like the sketch. My drawing has become so tight that it felt good to just sketch and not care about the outcome.

That is lovely. Nice touch of colour.
